Job Title: Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher
Location: Mena School District, Mena, Arkansas
Reports To: Building Principal

Position Summary

The 6th Grade ELA Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening aligned to Arkansas Academic Standards. The teacher will foster a structured, engaging, and literacy-rich classroom environment that supports student growth and prepares learners for success in middle school and beyond.

Qualifications

  • Valid Arkansas Teaching License with appropriate certification in English Language Arts
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education (or related field) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy practices
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned ELA instruction, including reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking/listening skills
  • Implement research-based literacy practices, including explicit instruction in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies as appropriate for upper elementary/middle grades
  • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, and advanced students
  • Create a positive and structured classroom environment that promotes student engagement and accountability
  • Integrate writing across content areas and provide meaningful feedback to improve student writing
  • Collaborate with colleagues, interventionists, and special education staff to support student achievement
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress with students, parents, and administration
  • Participate in professional development, team meetings, and district initiatives
  • Utilize district-approved curriculum and instructional resources effectively

Instructional Expectations

  • Align instruction with Arkansas Academic Standards for ELA
  • Incorporate reading of complex texts and text-based discussion
  • Emphasize writing for multiple purposes (informative, argumentative, narrative)
  • Use data to drive instruction and intervention decisions
  • Support development of academic vocabulary and language skills

Working Conditions

  • Standard classroom environment in a public school setting
  • Frequent standing, walking, and interaction with students
  • Occasional extended hours for meetings, events, or professional development

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and the Arkansas Teacher Excellence and Support System (TESS).

Terms of Employment

  • Contract length: 190 days
  • Salary: Based on district salary schedule and experience
  • Benefits: As provided by district policy
